Thursday, April 20th, marks the kickoff of the 18th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival.
We are so fortunate to live in Southern California. Most days we don’t need reminding – the endless sunshine, moderate temperatures and friendly people do that for us. But sometimes we forget just how lucky we are. Right down the street from our store, is Edwards Cinema on Newport Center Drive. This landmark theater plays host to one of the country’s most popular film festivals, the Newport Beach Film Festival.
This year marks the 18th year of the Festival’s dedication to the craft of film. Over the years they have presented many acclaimed films such as the U.S. Premiere of Crash, (500) Days of Summer, The Cove, Waitress, Son of Rambow, Paprika, Broken English, and American Teen – just to name a few. The Festival draws 55,000 attendees to our area, flocking to not only take in the films, but to also enjoy our pristine beaches and culinary delights. The Festival presents over 350 films in just 8 days, featuring the best in new, local, international and critically acclaimed cinema to Newport Beach.
The NBFF, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, seeks to bring to Orange County the best of classic and contemporary filmmaking from around the world. The goal o the Festival is to enlighten the public with a first-class international film program as well as provide a forum for cultural understanding and enriching educational opportunities. The Festival focuses on showcasing a diverse collection of both studio and independent films and supports the creation and advancement of innovative and artistic cinematic works from both emerging and seasoned filmmakers. With the integration of the local community and educational institutions, the Festival stimulates an interest in the study and appreciation of film and encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to participate.
At tonight’s sold out Opening event, the first film to be shown will be Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton. This film is the remarkable story of the American icon and innovator who changed the sport of big wave surfing forever. Laird Hamilton is an athlete who refused to compete professionally, yet dominated and changed his sport like no other figure in history has ever done. This is an in-depth portrait of a hard-charging, driven athlete that explores the fear, courage, ambition and talent that push a man to greatness–and the cost that comes with it. After the film, the Festival will host a Gala at Fashion Island to celebrate this year’s filmmakers, actors, and guests. Tickets for the Gala are still available for purchase at this link.
You can see the full calendar of showings here. We hope you take the opportunity to see one of these films.
